An American Wirehair cat has a fur coat that looks and feels like the wool of a lamb. The hair is actually quite curled rather tight and wiry on top of its little body. The springy curls are coarse. Naturally due to the fur similar to a lamb coat it creates a thick coat of fur which covers the cat’s body. The fur is approximately medium in length. The stomach and the under side has a slightly different texture of fur. The fur in this area is much softer or not nearly as wiry. The fur on these cats is similar to the wirehair terrier dog’s fur. The fur coat on these cats can be one of many coat colors. These cats’ structure is comparable to those of the American Shorthaired cats which are well rounded big or medium bodies. These cats’ eyes can be one of many different colors but they are round. The American Wirehair cats are most affectionate with a winning personality. For these reasons the American Wirehair cats endure as wonderful house pets that will readily befriend you for life.
If you intend to enter your American Wirehaired cat into any of the cat competitions their curly fur must evenly cover the top part of your cat’s fur coat. The curls need to be springy and very tight so that they return to their original form. The fur cannot be long length curls of fur. Patchy fur coats are not are not true American Wirehair cats. Any one of these features or a combination of these features is not acceptable for cat competition judging purposes.
