When a Cat Becomes More Than a Cat

The other day I was perusing the cat treat aisle at the grocery store and the person with me impatiently said, “Pick one.  They’re just cats.”  I was a bit surprised by my friend’s remark.  After all, she knows I love my furry ones dearly.  Later in the day, I got to thinking about that.  Just when did my cat become more than a cat?

When my sister and I were young kids, we had two cats.  They were permitted in the house during the day but were put outside at night.  We did not have a litter box in the house, so whenever they wanted to go out, we let them out.  Eventually, they got ran over by cars on the street in front of our house.  We had a few cats after that, but we always thought of them strictly as cats.

So when did they become a real part of the family?  It had to be once we became adults and our cats were exclusively indoor cats.  Their time spent with us dramatically increased; therefore we paid more attention to them.  We saw them at their every moment of cuteness.  They rolled over, stretched, and looked lovingly at us.  They sat in a bag, a box, a hat, a clothes hamper, etc. and were just so adorable!  They were curious about everything, the string on a blanket, the book I was reading, my suitcase, and any new item in the house.  They followed us upstairs, downstairs, to the bathroom, and into our hearts.
