A few weekends ago we went to visit an uncle who has moved into a senior living center out of the area. I was truly amazed at all of the different activities that they have available for their residents. My uncle is learning to carve and thus far he made a bird, a dog, and a couple of other pieces. He invested in a woodcarving kit so he has a variety of carving tools from which to choose for his many pieces. This center had a huge library with a cozy fireplace and there were several readers that magnify the pages in a person’s book for more comfortable reading for those whose eye sight is not as good as needed for reading. The have a couple of wood working rooms with saw, piles of lumber and pieces of wood, a lot of sandpaper and sanders, and so much more. The center has a ceramic section for people who enjoy this type of craft. Another room is filled with a large variety of looms for making rugs, tapestries, and other creations from the loom. Their fitness area included exercise bikes, treadmills, and an entertainment center with the wii workouts. Their computer lab is always a busy place to maintain contact with their family and friends. An office room has printers, fax machines, copiers, and many more pieces of equipment. They can even rent a van for $30 a day but the mileage is restricted or you can join in a shopping trips and other outing by signing up without a charge.
The housing units are extremely clean and cheery and you can have either one or two bedrooms. A patio comes with every main floor units and a balcony for the units on the other floors all of them are facing a well kept, lush lawn, and canopy setting areas in the courtyard. There is a kitchenette if the senior want to do some cooking, baking, etc. They have microwaves and dishwashers, cable, internet, phones, etc. The washers and driers are on every wing and are free of charge.
The people can sign up for volunteer work if they so choose. I was surprised they did not have a spa or a pool. The dining room is huge and senior sitting is rotated so that they meet many new friends and it makes them feel at home. This complex includes assisted living and nursing home services too. It is an all in one center for seniors of all ages. A country store is open for limited hours to purchase the little necessities and groceries and treat desired.
Moving into a center like this makes a lot of sense for seniors since the building are most secure and they have few chose so they are free to participate in the many activities and enjoy the rest of their days. People sometime think of these places as a place to go to die. But it is to the contrary, since these centers are truly for developing new interests and meeting new friends to make their days of their life worth living and worth while. Before moving seniors into a center take them on a visit or tour of the facilities as this may help develop a positive feeling about moving in to a senior residential center. The seniors are living the life of Riley at the comfortable, and activity based living centers and they are truly filled with happiness in their life.
But you must realize that not every senior living center is the same so it is best to take a tour of a couple of them before making the big decision to relocate to one of the senior complexes. The one our uncle resides in is in a large urban city.
